Chess – Unheard Lyrics – You and I

Chess has been chopped and changed so much over the years, with lyrics being altered to fit the production, new songs being added and so on. After the cut ‘Press Conference’ was released on the recent re-release, I’ve looked at a few other Chess songs that have never, or rarely been heard.

You and I (Demo from 1984 Album)

This demo version exists on a barely audible bootleg from the original sessions, featuring Tommy Korberg and Elaine Paige. It seems that the You and I on the album, as part of the epilogue, was originally a reprise. This version seems to fit at the start of Act 2, as You and I did in the original London show, and features The Russian and Florence singing about their future together, and his discovery that the KGB are playing games with his family.

<Florence>
Oh its just lovely ?and yet,
Whatever comes?
No expectations.
<Anatoly>
And yet I love you so much
That hasn’t changed
I still believe in us
I’m just worried
And a bit tired
It’s so absurd
Our situation
<Both>
You and I,
What do we want?
What is our heart’s desire?
This is just the beginning…….
And it’s not easy
To see who’s winning.
<ANATOLY>
I should have guessed it.
I know the bastards…
Keeping my son,
Sending my Wife.
As a reminder!
<FLORENCE>
And if you don’t let them in
What happens then?
<ANATOLY>
Oh Please don’t ask me!
<BOTH>
I’ve had enough of this game..
You don’t mean chess
You/ I mean the scheming
Darling I beg you
Don’t let them do it
Don’t/won’t let them/him win
We can go through it…<Both>
But if i met you
Don’t let them do it.
<Both>
You and I,
What do we want?
What is our heart’s desire?
This is just the beginning
And it’s not easy
To say who’s winning.
