The eighties BBC TV series ‘A Very Peculiar Practice’ by Andrew Davies had its outdoor scenes shot at both Keele University and the University of Birmingham.

The scenes at Birmingham included the Vale and the lake, Chamberlain Tower, Muirhead Tower, University Centre and the education building.

At Keele, the Student Union ballroom (before it was painted black and was still wood-panelled) was featured

The front of the library were used for a scene where the campus nuns play frisbee (when not rummaging in bins), and also for the final episode’s protest.

The plaza outside the Student union shops was used frequently; here at the start of Series 2 when Dr Jock MacCrimmon is sitting on the concrete benches.

The final scene of the series features Lowlands converted into a military base; which smoke pouring from the destroyed students union.

And the show featured a theme tune by Dave Greenslade, sung by Elkie Brooks, called ” We Love You”.

It’s a long way from anywhere you’ve ever been before.

Got to get your act together – were not sure,

We love you.

We need you.

We love you.

We hear you.

We need you.

We’re living in a low life city

Oh there’s one or two are sitting pretty

And you’ve got to get your act together

Please be sure

We love you

We need you

We love you.

We hear you.

We need you.

We love you.

And we’ve all got to live together, that’s for sure.

We’ll always love you.
